Festival of Whales’ final weekend

whalesHave a “whale” of a time at the Festival of Whales in Dana Point this weekend, March 8-9. This is the second and final weekend for the 37th annual Festival, which offers a variety of activities, including live music, art shows, sailing and of course, whale watching.

During this migration season, from December through March, more than 40 whales pass by Dana Point every day.

There are a number of whale-watching excursions and charters to choose from, so check out the official web site now! Don’t miss the boat!

Experience ‘Chicano Art and Soul’ at Muzeo

chicanoThrough April 13, you can experience Chicano Art and Soul through three nationally acclaimed interactive and introspective exhibits at Muzeo in Anaheim. Our favorite Chicano, Cheech Marin, presents “Chicano Now,” “Papel Chicano” and “The Chicano Collection,” all at So Cal’s newest museum and cultural arts center.

Adults and children alike will love the interactive activities, like driving a hydraulic ‘57 Chevy, learning how to salsa and viewing Chicano independent films.

There’s a huge display of art in all different mediums as well.

This is a great place to experience culture with the whole family or, if you’re a teacher, to take students on a field trip. For group visits, you can e-mail bookings@muzeo.com or call 714-956-8936.

The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission for adults is $10, seniors and students $9 and children 3-12 $8.

Art expressions by a Muslim American at CSUF

paintingSama Wareh is a Muslim American woman who uses art to express herself, and to depict her life. You can get a glimpse into that life by seeing an exhibit of her work at the Titan Student Union Gallery at Cal State Fullerton, now through April 4.

Sama is the youngest of eight Muslim children and receives her inspiration from summer trips back to her home country of Syria. Sama received her Bachelor of Arts in Film from Cal State Fullerton but uses a variety of different mediums such as acrylic, oil paints, prismacolor pencils, chalk, airbrush, spray paint and clay.

Admission to the exhibit, “What is Written and What is Not: Expressions of a Contemporary Muslim American Woman,” is free. The gallery is open Monday-Thursday from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday noon to 10 p.m.

José Casas’ tragedy “14″ in Santa Ana

cautionFrom now until March 15 you can experience José Casas “14” in Santa Ana. This tragic play, told in monologues, shows the story of 14 Mexican immigrants who died in the sweltering Arizona desert whilst crossing the border in May 2001. It has been called “Best Original Play” by the ARIZONIA and won the Theatre Award of Excellence in 03-04.

Casas wrote this play based upon many interviews he gave. It is said to investigate the complex relationship between Mexicans, Chicanos and Anglos who reside in Arizona. This play isn’t about who’s good and who’s bad but the gray area that we must accept in between the two.

“14” shows on Fridays and Saturday at 8 p.m. You can also catch a Sunday matinee at
3 p.m. on March 2 and 9. General admission is $15 with students and seniors at $10. Remember to bring a valid I.D.

Untold Stories of the Gold Rush in Fullerton

goldFrom now until March 2, see the exhibit “Gold Fever: Untold Stories of the California Gold Rush” at the Fullerton Museum Center. The Gold Rush set the stage for California’s development and now you can learn all about it: from before gold was discovered in 1848 to the frantic dash to California in 1849.

The museum in open Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 4 p.m., Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m., Fridays through Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays.

General admission is $4, seniors 65+ and students are $3 and children 6 to 12 are $1. Also, if you go the first Thursday of the month, everyone gets in for only $2 each.

Don’t miss this exhibit on the rush that defined California.

Tigers! At the Discovery Science Center

tigerThrough May 4, you and the little tykes can learn all about tigers and track the legend of these mysterious creatures. The Discovery Science Center combines biology, ecology, geography and natural history into a compelling high-definition experience for all to enjoy.

The exhibit focuses on a Bengal tiger family at the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve. Through their story, you will learn all about the preservation and protection of tigers from being hunted for sport. You will identify tiger tracks, direction, speed and learn how a tigress travels with her cub.

The Science Center is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Admission for children ages 3 to 17 is $9.95, for adults $12.95. Kids age 2 and under get in free.

Saturday: A Tribute to Journey at OC Pavilion

PerrySaturday, Feb. 16 you can see Evolution: A Tribute to Journey at the OC Pavilion in Santa Ana. The classic ’80s hits from Journey have been carried through friends and family for more than 10 years and they’re not slowing down even a little bit now.

This musical extravaganza will be performed by the best Journey tribute bands, Escape and Infinity with lead vocals done by Dave Alcantar.

The show begins at 8 p.m. in the beautifully reconstructed OC Pavilion. Tickets are $25 or $30. You can purchase them at the online box office.

Evolution has been said to warm the hearts of all who see it.

Bob Marley Tribute Concert on Friday!

groundationThis Friday, Feb 8, check out the Bob Marley Tribute Concert at the Galaxy Theatre in Santa Ana. Feel the love with reggae guest artists Groundation, Will Barnard and G. Tonic.

Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” in Costa Mesa

magic fluteThere are only two chances left to see the colorful and sparkling production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute at the OC Performing Arts Center. See an incredibly talented cast, including the winner of the BBC’s Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, Nicole Cabell. You won’t regret seeing this timeless masterpiece on stage.

You can catch a show on Thursday, Jan. 31, or Saturday, Feb 2. Both shows start at 7:30 p.m. and run about two hours and 30 minutes.

Tickets will cost you anywhere from $27 to $275, depending on the seats you choose. Check out the Performing Artscenter web site to purchase tickets before they’re all gone. You’ve got to see this delightful performance of eye candy.

Saturday Antique Fair at Old World Village

antique ringsThis Saturday, Jan 19, check out the Antique Fair at the Old World Village in Huntington Beach! You’ll find beautiful, unusual and one-of-a-kind items that will make any antique lover crazy.

Plus, you can’t beat the European atmosphere of the Old World Village. It’s the perfect place to stroll around, but at the fair, you’ll probably find items older than the village itself!

Antique collectors and dealers gather at Old World every third Saturday of the month to sell their items. So if you can’t make it this weekend, try again next month.

The fair starts bright and early at 8 a.m. and can go until 4 p.m., depending on the weather. Admission to the fair is free, but who knows how much you’ll spend on purchases?
